Where we think different |

Solo Han asks: "I'mconsidering a move to China next year, and while Ihave just as many problems as y'all do with the government, I stilllike the freedoms afforded me, especially when it comes to access ofinformation. Chinese citizens, however, do not have the same freedoms,as we are constantly reminded here on slash-o-dot. Pr0n, mp3z, andgames aside, what are the things that those of you in the CelestialKingdom know you cannot access, and specifically, what are thewebsites, search engines, news sites, and other sites that are classedas potentially 'dangerous' material? This brings me to my overallquestion: is the censorship that real, that hard to get around, and howdo you do it? What methods and technologies are you aware of or use tocircumvent the Great Firewall of China?"

Don'ttake your privacy forgranted
Just because thegovernment canknow everything about you doesn't meanit should.
We've been reading up on the federal government's progress towardcreating a new medical database, called the National Health InformationNetwork. The idea is to create a more efficient system for keeping andsharing patient information. Ultimately, we'll all have electronichealth records.
It's an innovation intendedto be used for good. But it also could beused for evil.

"You have two peoplewhose job it is to see if the name on yourdriver's license is the same as the name on your ticket -- as if anyself-respecting terrorist would fail to think of that. You have a guywhose job is to shout out a reminder for you to take off your jacketand get your computer out of your bag. You've got one-year-olds takingoff their shoes. It is hard to think of a way you could caricatureitto make it look sillier." At the same time, the ritual manages to beintimidating, as a standing reminder of how much Americans have to fear.

Newfeature: People Like Me
A newfeatureon the Share Your OPML site, an Andrew-Dave collaboration, it listspeople whose subscription lists are most like yours. Think of it asyour personal echo chamber. It's an interesting way todiscover newfeeds you aren't subscribed to.
